Important Attributes to Model From Quality Paragraphs

• Look for economy of expression. Paragraphs should avoid redundancy and repetition from one sentence to another.

• Look for consistent point of view and verb tense.

• Look for smoothness of expression. Paragraphs should be straightforward and stick to the point. Content should be organized in a logical manner, and you should be able to follow the author’s train of thought.

Deconstructing a Paragraph

Have you ever taken apart a device and, in so doing, come to a better understanding of why it was put together a certain way? Just as we did with syntax and sentence-level writing, we’re going to deconstruct the basics of paragraph writing. The major paragraph components generally include a topic sentence, or main idea, compelling evidence to support that main idea, and analysis of that evidence. A strong paragraph also almost always includes a transition to the next main point or topic, which is presented in a new paragraph. This is called the MEAL plan. The guidelines on the MEAL plan come from Duke University’s Writing Studio (n.d.), and we explain each one separately below.
